Choose Props That Reflect Your Theme

No gothic photoshoot is complete without the perfect props. Whether it’s a candelabra, skull, or antique furniture, choose items that reflect your desired look and give off an dark and spooky vibe. Take your time and search for unique pieces to make your photoshoot truly one-of-a-kind!

Tip: go to second hand stores, flea markets, … they often have them at really low prices! Or you can even make them yourself if you enjoy crafting.

Pick a Location With the Right Ambience

Location is key when it comes to creating the perfect gothic photoshoot. Look for a space that evokes the feel you’re going for – an abandoned house, graveyard, or forest are all great options as they add to the overall spooky atmosphere. Take scouting trips to get ideas and use your creativity to create an unforgettable backdrop for your photos. I personally take pictures with my phone when looking for locations, and use google maps to find them again.

Just a heads up on graveyards and abandoned places: be careful to not damage anything, also don’t do anything illegal!

Incorporate Lighting To Enhance Your Scene

Lighting is a critical element of creating a gothic feel in your photoshoot. Use natural light if available and supplement with additional lights to create interesting shadows, angles, and effects. This is often easier in indoors locations (with electricty). Installing dimmers or colored gels can help create the atmosphere you are trying to evoke while also helping you control the intensity of light within the space. Experiment with different types of lighting until you find the right one for your photoshoot.

Tip: you can rent colored lights or flashes that are battery powered at places such as Kamera Express. This is a great alternative to investing in a set.

Plan Out The Shoot Ahead Of Time

When planning a gothic photoshoot, it’s important to do your research and plan out exactly what you want to achieve with the shoot. Have an idea of the location, props and any additional effects that can help create your perfect gothic atmosphere. Make sure you map out each shot before heading off to the shoot so that you can get the most out of your time on location. Bring a list of shot ideas as well as any equipment or props you will need for each scene.

I make a folder on my phone with screenshots that I can access anywhere, even if I don’t have any internet available. Apps such as Unscripted can help with poses.

Utilize Backdrops For Variety

An easy way to switch up your photoshoot in a studio and add variety is to use backdrops. Find a gothic wallpaper or hang fabrics with textures that evoke the feel you’re going for, such as velvet, lace, or organza. You can also use physical props to change up the backdrops, such as placing furniture in front of the backdrop to shift the mood from dark and hauntingly mysterious to more grand.
